China's Southeast University Upgrades Wireless LANs Across 6 Campuses

Southeast University in Nanjing, China has deployed Aruba Networks WiFi networks across its six campuses. The university, with 26,000 students and 5,600 faculty members, wanted to upgrade wireless service for its many libraries and teaching facilities, but its legacy network was unable to cope with the traffic presented by the fast-growing number of users.

Purdue Team Driving SiCortex Low-power Supercomputer in 2008 Cluster Challenge

A team of student engineers at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN will be using technology from SiCortex, a Massachusetts company that makes lower-power supercomputers, for its cluster computing entry in an upcoming competition. The Boilermaker Cluster Challenge team will be entering its design at SC08, a supercomputer conference put on in November by IEEE Computer Society and the Association for Computing Machinery.

U Arizona To Optimize Wireless Networks on Campus

The University of Arizona in Tucson said it has begun using wireless LAN tools from AirMagnet, including Survey and Planner, to help optimize and plan wireless networks throughout the campus. The campus includes approximately 115 core buildings and more than 35,000 students. Of those 115 buildings, 70 are currently wireless enabled, encompassing more than 7.5 million square feet. It has 5,000 wireless access points.

King Abdullah U and IBM Join To Build Middle East's Most Powerful Supercomputer

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and IBM have announced a joint project to build and conduct research on one of the most complex, high-performance computing (HPC) systems in the world. The new system, named Shaheen, will serve the university's scientific researchers across multiple disciplines, advance new innovations in computational sciences, and contribute to the further development of a knowledge-based society in Saudi Arabia.

Cray Inc., in conjunction with Intel and Microsoft, this week unveiled a relatively low-cost supercomputer that works in office environments. The Cray CX1 high-performance computing (HPC) machine features the use of Intel processors for the first time and comes with Windows HPC Server 2008 preinstalled. It also works with Red Hat Linux Version 5.

VMware Fusion 2 Expands Hardware Support, Improves Networking

VMware has released VMware Fusion 2.0, a major update to the desktop virtualization solution for Mac OS X that has been in public beta since back in July. The new version, a free upgrade for users of VMware Fusion 1.x, focuses on expanded support for Mac hardware configurations, including additional graphics capabilities, as well as networking, security, storage, and application sharing improvements.

Intel Rolls Out 65W, 6-core Xeon 7400 Processors

Intel this week began rolling out its new line of Xeon processors targeted toward server markets. The new Xeon 7400 series features four- and six-core configurations designed to be used in systems with at least four processors and is targeted largely toward data centers and, in particular, virtualization applications.

Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications in China has deployed a campus-wide wireless LAN (WLAN) from Motorola. The WLAN will enable multimedia Internet-based teaching, automatic academic office management, Internet access, long-distance teaching, and other services. Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications is one of the few universities in China to provide complete wireless LAN coverage to every building in addition to the campus' outdoor spaces.

Ferrum College in southwestern Virginia has chosen to replace its campus-wide legacy Cisco network infrastructure with Juniper Network switching, network access control (NAC), and firewall/virtual private network (VPN) solutions. The college chose the new equipment after deciding to extend 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) throughput across the network in support of advanced voice over IP (VoIP) by fall 2009.
