The State University of New York-Maritime College this fall will debut two new online courses developed in collaboration with The History Channel. Both courses are to be based around History Channel television series and will be offered for credit, marking the first time The History Channel has developed a course for college credit.

The Library of Congress announced $2.5 million in grants for projects to establish digital format standards for preserving photos, films, music, and video games. The funding covers eight organizations involved in significant digital content projects, including UCLA's Film and Television Archive and the "Preserving Virtual Worlds" project at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

The National Science Foundation approved $208 million in funding to build the world's most powerful supercomputer. The "Blue Waters" project, undertaken by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will build a machine capable of more than one quadrillion operations per second, or a "petaflop."

Researchers at the U.K.'s Bath University have developed a tool that uses the unique electronic IDs of Bluetooth devices, such as a mobile phone, to map the physical paths of friendship networks, the BBC reported.

Graduate students from the University of Minnesota's computer science and engineering departments hosted middle school students last week. The five-day high-tech camp attracted 30 students from Minneapolis and St. Paul who created 3D movies, programmed robotic dogs, and digitally altered the sound of their own voices.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency named 36 semi-finalists in its renowned robot race, the DARPA Urban Challenge. The race pits self-driving vehicles designed by some of the country's top computer science students against each other along a grueling physical course.

Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts will deploy Honeywell's new Instant Alert Plus, a system designed to send out alerts to students, faculty, and staff in times of emergency. The "Plus" version of Instand alert is a Web-based notification system that can, according to Honeywell, deliver 100,000 30-second phone calls and 125,000 text messages in 15 minutes.

Penn Libraries, the University of Pennsylvania Library system, is embarking on a project to digitize its special collections, including rare books and historical documents. The project will kick off this summer and culminate in a fully searchable collection of rare books online.

The University of Portland recently deployed GroupDrive software from South River Technologies, a developer of file transfer and collaboration software, for online file sharing on its campus. The software will be used for student and faculty collaboration, as well as for the university's back office, and is designed to replace other forms of online file-sharing such as email, according to South River.

The Higher Education Wireless Access Consortium has recently thrown its support behind the M2Z Network's license application to the FCC. M2Z networks have been working on using radio airwaves to provide a national wireless Internet free to consumers. The proposal is for M2Z to forgo the normal auction for radio waves and instead to pay the national treasury 5 percent of revenues every year for 15 years. The estimated total of the 5 percent would equal more than $1 billion over the allocated time span.

Yahoo! will open an office in University of Illinois's home town of Urbana-Champaign. The office, which will pursue a cross-section of the Web giant's operations and business interests, will employ about 100 engineers, according to Ken Timmons, vice president of operations for Yahoo!
