Northern Michigan University has deployed 6,000 Lenovo ThinkPad R61 notebooks to its full-time students to provide access to 724 Web-based classes this fall. This is the 10th year that NMU has issued ThinkPads to its student body.

Genetec has released version 2.0 of its IP access control security application, Synergis. The program provides a unified security console through two modules. SecurityDesk allows the user to control and monitor the security system by consolidating video, audio, and access control data into one interface. ConfigTool is an interface for managing users, cardholders, access credentials, schedules, and hardware devices. It also provides reporting capabilities.

School supply company Mead is taking the plunge into education technology with the launch of a new interactive whiteboard. Dubbed, appropriately enough, the Mead Interactive Whiteboard, the new model incorporates a 77-inch interactive projection screen, multimedia pen, mounting hardware, and software suite targeted toward education.

PIER Systems has launched version 6.0 of the PIER--Public Information Emergency Response--system. The intent of the PIER program is to allow public affairs staff to draft, edit, and send out a message to multiple audiences directly, without having to go through conventional mass communication channels. PIER also allows users to send out notifications such as SMS text messages, manage public inquiries and respond to media effectively.

Iona College in New Rochelle, NY has selected InfoExpress CyberGatekeeper to protect the college wireless network. The InfoExpress appliance controls access to the network by auditing all devices before granting access. The solution can be deployed in monitor mode, giving organizations the option to remediate endpoints "on the fly" without having to restrict access to users.

The University of North Carolina, Charlotte has signed a licensing agreement with Southeast TechInventures Inc. (STI) to streamline negotiations and accelerate the acquisition of intellectual property--a key step in the technology commercialization process. The University of Texas at Austin has signed an agreement with Copyright Clearance Center to adopt CCC's Annual Copyright License for academic institutions. This license gives librarians, faculty, copy shop staff, and others with pre-approved permission to use content in coursepacks, e-reserves, course management systems, and research collaboration.

The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges is rolling out a new system to deliver online classes, presentations, and meetings. The organization recently signed on with Elluminate to use that company's Elluminate Learning Suite across its 34 member colleges.

A class at California State University, Long Beach has signed up to receive online tutoring in Chinese from eChineseLearning. The company, based in Beijing, provides Chinese language lessons for academic, business, and personal use through Skype. The program was piloted earlier this year by eight students in CSU's Asian and Asian American Studies Department who were studying the fundamentals of Chinese. Each student received an hour of tutoring each week.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Technology of Minnesota State University, Mankato has selected Alpha Software's Alpha Five Platinum as the standard programming tool for its engineering curriculum. Engineering students are now using Alpha Five to develop databases that support hardware design, system integration, project management, budget management, verification plans and reports, and engineering tools.

Vanderbilt University and Medical Center (VUMC) will be upgrading its wireless connectivity on campus with the help of Sprint, a long-time provider of wireless services to the school. Sprint will expand the existing system, including additional network coverage on both the Nationwide Sprint Network and the Nextel National Network covering eight buildings.

Johnson County Community College (JCCC) in Overland Park, Kansas has adopted the Angel Learning Management Suite (LMS) to deliver online and blended courses. The largest of Kansas' 19 community colleges, JCCC chose to transition to the Angel LMS from Blackboard following a review of available products. According to a statement from the vendor, the college chose Angel for its stability, ease of use, and feature set.

Microsoft last Wednesday touted the success of its online extension to Microsoft Office, a free browser-based application that's still in beta release. One million people so far have signed up to use the Microsoft Office Live Workspace Beta after six months of the beta's public availability, according to an announcement issued by the company.

Liberty University has installed a storage area network (SAN) from Network Appliance (NetApp) to accommodate an increase in enrollment and a greater reliance on digital information. The school has 11,300 resident students and 39,000 distance learners.

Teachers Domain, a free online resource for educators, has announced expanded content in science, math, art, social studies, and language arts. The online library is also launching two new editions: Teachers' Domain College Edition, designed for higher education, and VITAL New York on Teachers' Domain, providing resources for New York teachers that are aligned with the state's core curriculum.

Borrego Solar Systems announced last week that it has been selected by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) to install a 1.2 megawatt solar electric system. The grid-connected system will provide approximately 2.4 million kilowatt hours of energy per year, contributing to the university’s overall sustainable energy goals.
