In an effort to shift virtual worlds to the broader realm of the World Wide Web, Linden Lab and IBM are partnering to bring open standards and interoperability to Second Life, the online 3D realm created by Linden Lab. The two will also be working with a broad range of industry partners and have discussed the formation of an open consortium for all comers to engage in the effort.

Open source software (OSS) is not so much the underdog in the IT world, according survey findings announced by Barracuda Networks, a provider of e-mail and Web security appliances. Barracuda polled 288 IT security professionals and found their preferences to be roughly split on the likelihood of deploying OSS versus proprietary software, particularly for applications with similar functionality.

It was about 14 months ago that Apple first previewed Mac OS X 10.5 ("Leopard") at its 2006 Worldwide Developers Conference. Now, following delays reportedly resulting from resources shifting to iPhone development, the company has announced a release date for the new OS: Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. Coinciding with the release is Mac OS X Leopard Server, which includes the first commercial CalDAV calendar server, along with Wiki Server and Podcast Producer.

Education technology developer Wimba has released Wimba Voice 5.2, an update to the company's audio module for its Collaboration Suite, which also includes Wimba Classroom, Wimba Create, and Wimba Pronto. The new version expands the tool's functionality and end-user features and enhances some existing features.

October 16, 2007 -- 1105 Education Group, a division of 1105 Media Inc., announced today the appointment of Ellen Romanow as Associate Publisher of the business unit dedicated to serving the K-20 education technology community. Romanow will be responsible for sales and custom media across the growing division of print, online, and events. She will report to Wendy La Duke, Education Group Publisher.

The University of Washington has become the first university to join a new academic initiative launched by IBM and Google, according to information released last week by IBM. The goal of the initiative is to foster better practices in highly parallel computing among computer science students. U Washington is joined by several other institutions that will pilot the program.

Twenty teams of university and college students are showing off their solar powers this week at the 2007 Solar Decathlon in Washington, DC. The event, put on by the United States Department of Energy, includes students from 23 universities around the world, whose exhibits in the National Mall are open to the public through Oct. 20.

Certiport has come up with a new model for promoting digital literacy in college and university students. Based around its IC³ certification, the four-component program is aimed at assessing and developing digital skills in students as they enter into higher education. Broward Community College in Florida piloted a program this semester using IC³ on incoming freshmen.

Swiss IP audio technology developer Barix is launching new emergency communications and public safety tools using a "three-tier" approach, comprising various IP-based communications devices. The communications packages are designed specifically for use in multi-building campuses.

Georgia Perimeter College in Atlanta has deployed a Web-based visual communications platform from Visix, AxisTV, to enhance messaging to students on four of its sites. The technology is being used to narrowcast messages to large-screen LCD displays in its Newton County, Clarkston, Decatur, and Dunwoody locations.

The Georgia Institute of Technology is establishing a new electronic design automation simulation center with the help of Agilent. The global tech firm made one of its largest investments to a higher education institution when it donated $13 million in EDA software, support, and training to Georgia Tech's Georgia Electronic Design Center in Atlanta.

Hitachi Software Engineering America has debuted its new StarBoard FX 77 Duo, an interactive whiteboard that supports multiple simultaneous input. Targeted toward the education and presentation market, the whiteboard uses Hitachi Soft's StarBoard software to allow multiple users to interact with the device at the same time and to allow for gestural control of presentation materials.

Earlier this year, three universities in the U.K. formed an alliance for collaborating on biological and biomedical sciences called the South West London Academic Network. Now the collaborative alliance is deploying technologies to deliver a series of courses that share resources between the three participating universities.

Hitachi this week debuted a new projector for the education market, the CP-A100. The new 3LCD model is capable of projecting a 60-inch image from a range of 1.4 feet. So teaching class in the broom closet shouldn't be a problem anymore ... aside from the crowding.

The ever-nebulous "Web 2.0" is emerging as one of the five top security risks to watch for both consumers and the enterprise--this according to the inaugural edition of the "GTISC Emerging Cyber Threats Report for 2008" out of Georgia Tech's Information Security Center. The report, released at the GTISC Security Summit on Emerging Cyber Security Threats and Countermeasures, identifies the key data security threats that are likely to expand and evolve in the coming year.
