Embry-Riddle Bolsters Security for Sensitive Data

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is beefing up its data security with a new identity management system designed to centralize and automate security processes across multiple systems. The university worked with security service provider Mycroft to develop and deploy its security strategy based around Oracle tools, including the Identity and Access Management Suite.

Agile Process Showcased at IT Architect Event

Last week, IT architects put their profession squarely on the map at the first annual IT Architect Regional Conference for Southern California. This local San Diego-based event, part of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA), wasn't just a typical forum for punditry on the sometimes obscure topic of service-oriented architecture (SOA). It was more a meeting of colleagues. The keynotes and sessions were frequently paused to answer spontaneous questions and remarks from attendees.

Carnegie Expands Math Program to Higher Ed

Carnegie Learning is branching out into higher education with the release of algebra and pre-algebra software solutions targeted at college freshmen and sophomores. The online system, developed out of Carnegie Mellon University, is designed to assess individual students' abilities and provide differentiated instruction solutions to focus on their deficiencies.

Universities Deploy Oracle Administrative Systems

Several universities and colleges have recently purchased and deployed Oracle solutions for administration and marketing, the company reported at the Educause show in Seattle, WA. These include student lifecycle management, enterprise resource management, and marketing applications. Oracle provided details on three of these implementations: Brigham Young University-Hawaii, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and Moody Bible Institute.

ITCC To Bolster STEM Education

Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana this month received a $3.1 million grant from the state's North Central Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) initiative. The grant will be used to enhance STEM education in K-12, higher education, and businesses and will train an estimated 44,000 people in North Central Indiana over the next five years.

5 States Deploy NTC Transcript Exchange

The National Transcript Center (NTC) reported late last week that five states have adopted its preK-20 electronic transcript exchange system over the last year. These include Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming. NTC handled the development and deployment of the records systems.

CUNY Adopts Oracle for FIRST Project

City University of New York (CUNY) is revamping its administrative systems, consolidating a wide array of student information, human resources, and financial systems as part of its Fully Integrated Resources and Services Tool (FIRST) project. The university system, which comprises 23 institutions serving more than 430,000 students, will integrate its data using Oracle's PeopleSoft Enterprise Campus Solutions 9.0, for which Oracle will also provide hosting and consulting.

ShareLoader Appliance Automates Remote Backups

Crossroads Systems has started shipping a new appliance designed to automate backups of both on site and remote systems--SurePath ShareLoader. The appliance allows for backups of saved files on user machines (Windows-based) and also allows those users to retrieve lost data themselves, with the aim of reducing "IT overhead."

Darmstadt über Alles

In a competition that will surely serve as the plot for a future Broken Lizard film, Technische Universität Darmstadt this weekend won the overall 2007 Solar Decathlon, sponsored by the United States Department of Energy. Darmstadt was the sole German team in the international collegiate competition, which included teams from 17 American universities and one each from Spain and Canada.

iTunes U Expands 'Beyond Campus'

iTunes U, the education portal within Apple's iTunes, has expanded its content to include educational materials from sources beyond colleges and universities, including Smithsonian Global Sound, KQED, Little Kids Rock, and the Museum of Modern Art. The most recent addition to the expanded content area, known as Beyond Campus, is American Public Media, which is making its radio programming available free for educational purposes.

Moodle Comes to CampusVue Administrative System

Campus Management has completed beta testing on a program to integrate Moodle into its administrative and academic tools for higher education, including CampusVue. The result is a newly released learning management system called CampusLearning, which works with CampusVue, providing commercial support for the open-source platform and synchronization with the company's student information system.

Angel Adopts IMS Common Cartridge in LMS

Angel Learning this week announced new support for the IMS Global Learning Consortium's Common Cartridge standard in its learning management system, Angel LMS. The standard, developed through IMS GLC's Common Cartridge Alliance, is an open standard for content sharing. Angel last year contributed intellectual property for its development.

UCLA Deploys Classroom IP Audio Encoders

The University of California, Los Angeles is continuing its phased deployment of IP audio encoders for its classrooms. According to information released this week by Barix, the vendor supplying the Interstreamer encoding systems, UCLA's Office of Instructional Development has so far installed the devices in 43 classrooms, with plans for 200 classroom installations eventually.

UCSD Research Center Deploys ReadVerify Appliance

The San Diego Supercomputer Center, an NSF-funded research unit out of the University of California, San Diego, is deploying a stand-alone appliance to monitor the integrity of tape-based storage media. Crossroad Systems' SurePath ReadVerify Appliance will be used as part of the center's protection plan for its more than 5 petabytes of irreplaceable scientific data.

IBM Pursues CIO Leadership Development

IBM last week formed a new superinitiative called the Center for CIO Leadership, a global community of executives and academics focused on developing CIOs and advancing the profession as a whole. The Center will be headed by Executive Director Harvey Koeppel, with a governing council comprising CIOs and professors from MIT, INSEAD, Harvard, and other institutions.

Berkeley Puts Full Courses on YouTube

University of California, Berkeley this began making its course lectures and special events freely available on YouTube. At present, this amounts to more than 300 hours of captured courses and events. The university said it will continue to expand the volume and range of videos it makes available to the public.

Eclipse RAP Integrates Java Tools for RIA Development

The Eclipse Foundation released version 1.0 of the Eclipse Rich AJAX Platform (RAP). The organization is billing this toolset as the first AJAX platform that allows developers to create rich Internet applications (RIAs) using the Eclipse component model.
