Cloud Computing To Bring Security App Shift, Report Says

Microsoft's Chief Architect Ray Ozzie dubbed it a "Web-catalyzed services transformation," and some say the sky will be the limit for cloud computing in the enterprise. However, there still will be a strong need for information security -- even in the clouds. A new Gartner Inc. research report, released on Tuesday, predicts growth in the online security application industry segment as companies gravitate toward using hosted applications.

San Jose State Works with Angel Learning on Second Life Integration

San Jose State University (SJSU) School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) and Angel Learning are collaborating on a project to explore the integration of the Angel Learning Management Suite (LMS) and the Second Life virtual world. The work will focus on how student results from activities in virtual worlds can be securely shared with the Angel LMS. The expected outcome of the project is an Angel dropbox that students can use to share evidence of their work from within Second Life.

University of Minnesota Solar Car Team Begins Cross-country Race

The University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project--one of the first teams to meet all the qualifications for racing in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge--hit the road on July 13 in a 2,400-mile race from Texas to Canada that ends July 22. The team will be posting updates throughout the race.

Linden Lab and IBM Teleport Avatars Between Second Life and OpenSim

Linden Lab, creator of the virtual world Second Life, and IBM have demonstrated virtual world interoperability by teleporting avatars between the Second Life Preview Grid and an OpenSim virtual world server. The Second Life Grid is a development platform created by Linden Lab, and OpenSim is an open source server for hosting 3D virtual environments.

TokBox Offers Free Live Video Talk Functionality

A new plugin called TokBox, from a San Francisco company of the same name and funded by YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim, allows users to talk with each other over live video. A component with a "Push to Talk" button can be added to a social network profile, blog, or personal Webpage. A visitor clicks the button to connect to the host in real time using live video and audio.

St. Francis Xavier U Tackles Recruitment with CRM

Nova Scotia's St. Francis Xavier University is acquiring the Azorus CRM suite after working with the company's Digital Recruit system for the last year. With Digital Recruit, students at recruiting events fill out a special form with a digital pen that captures the information being written. Recruiters then upload the data stored on the pen to the CRM system, which initiates a communication plan for the student, including an automatic welcome e-mail message.

So two University of Arizona researchers have sussed out a way to save energy and keep data coming quickly, through a concept they call context-aware prefetching.
