UCSD Research Center Deploys ReadVerify Appliance

The San Diego Supercomputer Center, an NSF-funded research unit out of the University of California, San Diego, is deploying a stand-alone appliance to monitor the integrity of tape-based storage media. Crossroad Systems' SurePath ReadVerify Appliance will be used as part of the center's protection plan for its more than 5 petabytes of irreplaceable scientific data."As SDSC has been serving more than 10,000 researchers at 300 academic, government, and industrial institutions in the United States and around the world, we must ensure timely data preservation and restoration of enormous volumes of data being generated by researchers, educators, and practitioners," said Bryan Banister, storage systems manager at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, in a statement released this week. "We have selected to implement several instances of Crossroads RV200f in order to protect irreplaceable scientific information and, thus improving our customers' experience."
The appliance is designed to actively monitor the degradation found in tape cartridges for the prevention data loss and preservation of back-up data. It sends alerts automatically to warn administrators when tapes look to be heading toward failure so that those tapes can be replaced. It also provides regular performance reports to monitor and manage daily backup snapshots.
