Yahoo! To Open Illinois Office To Tap Engineering Talent

Yahoo! will open an office in University of Illinois's home town of Urbana-Champaign. The office, which will pursue a cross-section of the Web giant's operations and business interests, will employ about 100 engineers, according to Ken Timmons, vice president of operations for Yahoo!The office will be "an extension of Yahoo: It's going to be a Yahoo office with all kinds of activities that range across all the Yahoo products," Timmons told the Champaign News-Gazette.
"Yahoo will have a strong attracting effect," said Zukoski. "They're going to attract researchers at the university, students, and, I think ... companies and other interested parties outside Urbana-Champaign to come see what they're doing. We'll all benefit."
UI vice chancellor for research Charles Zukoski called the announcement "an affirmation that [Illinois] is one of the hotbeds for informatics in the world."
Bassel Ojjeh, Yahoo's senior vice president of strategic data solutions, said Yahoo! had its eyes on the Midwest because the region has "some of the top schools and some of the largest schools in the country."
