CERNET To Deploy VoiceEngine

China Educational Research Network (CERNET), China's IPV6 fiber optic network for education and research, will deploy VoiceEngine from Global IP Solutions (San Francisco, CA)) to improve voice quality for tis Digital Media Service, which connects more than 20 million chinese students and 3 million faculty and staff at more than 1,500 universities.

Funded by China's government and managed by its Ministry of Education, CERNET expects voice quality on its network to the point that it surpasses that of cell phones or public switched telephone network (PSTN) service. The keys to the high quality will be its configuration of VoiceEngine and integration of VoiceEngine with the IP Multimedia Subsystem provided by CERNET technology partner Koncept International, a virtual network provider with United States Headquarters in Pasadena, CA.

"It's a very competitive market, and our users are discerning individuals who demand the highest levels of voice quality," said George Kuang, CEO of CERNET Koncept Network, in a prepared statement. "However, it's not simply a case of selecting a technology platform, as CERNET Koncept Network is also looking for a partner that understands the China market and is as dedicated and as flexible as we are."

Launched as China's first nationwide TCP/IP backbone in 1994, CERNET has evolved steadily with recent milestones including adding a multicast network in 2002, and the creation of the China's first pure IPv6 backbone for academic applications in 2004.
