Polycom Intros HD Conferencing System

Communications technology developer Polycom this week introduced its forthcoming HDX 4000, a videoconferencing and collaboration system that includes high-definition capabilities. It's expected to ship in the fourth quarter.
The HDX 4000 is an all in one system that includes an integrated 20-inch widescreen; built-in HD camera with pan, tilt, and zoom capabilities; integrated dual HDX microphones, speakers and subwoofers; and a stand with an integrated keypad. t also incorporates a codec that allows for 720p/30 HD delivery at 1 Mbps to 4 Mbps and can deliver simultaneous streams of HD video and ancillary content, such as PowerPoint presentations, animation, diagrams, etc. Its microphones allow for stereo separation based on participants' locations in a room with audio delivered at a 22 kHz sample rate.
Other features include:
- Ability to be used through a standard phone line, with connectivity to regular (non-video) phones;
- Optional four-way multipoint capability that supports four sites within a call; and
- Support for transmissions from Mac and Windows systems.
The system can be targeted toward distance learning applications and can be combined with the Polycom Content Access Program, which gives educators access to content providers that offer HD programming for collaboration.
The HDX 4000 will be available in the fourth quarter of this year and is expected to sell for $7,999.
