UMass Amherst Signs Deal for VoIP, Advanced Tech

The University of Massachusetts Amherst inked a five-year research and deployment agreement for advanced technology with switching vendor Cedar Point Communications, the result of a successful test of voice over IP technology at the UMass Amherst campus.Cedar Point will use its Safari Multimedia Switching System to run over the existing UMass network infrastructure. The deal also calls for development of new advanced features and applications for voice and multimedia services.
"The evolution of IP voice communications has created both the need and the opportunity for an efficient and highly flexible campus network," said Daniel Blanchard, associate chief information officer for UMass, in a statement. "Our initial trial of Safari last year demonstrated that we could simply and cost-effectively deploy VoIP--and ultimately advanced voice services--in our residence halls."
